On February 19 the Health Services Amendment (Mandatory Vaccination of Healthcare Workers) Bill 2020 was introduced into the Victorian Parliament. These new laws will mean healthcare workers must be fully vaccinated with the flu vaccine each year, and must be up to date with vaccines for whooping cough, measles, chicken pox and hepatitis B.
This mandatory law applies to all healthcare workers in public and private hospitals and ambulance services with direct patient contact and includes doctors, nurses, paramedics, dentists, orderlies, cleaners and staff working in public sector residential aged care services.
Workers who refuse to be vaccinated may face work restrictions or be redeployed to other parts of the health service. Some nurses are now required to wear masks or they cannot care for patients.
We knew this discriminatory legislation would happen sooner or later but once again ‘progressive’ Victoria is an early adopter of draconian legislation.
In October 2015, the Victorian parliament passed the Public Health and Wellbeing Amendment (No Jab, No Play) Act 2015, amending the Victorian Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 (the Act). The legislation prohibits the enrolment of unvaccinated children in Victorian kindergartens and childcare services, with no exemptions for those with a conscientious objection to vaccination on secular or religious grounds.
This time it’s health workers facing mandatory vaccine laws. No Jab No Job.
Is there evidence that vaccinating hospital workers against the flu protects patients?
According to a study by Z. H Abramson
The evidence base supporting vaccination is unsound and prejudiced. The repeated conclusion that staff vaccination has preventive value for elderly patients in nursing homes appears to be the result of major methodological errors and wishful thinking. Even when there appears to be less morbidity and mortality in the intervention hospitals this probably resulted from other factors.
And then there are the risks of the flu vaccine
These can be considerable and as Peter Doshi says ‘should not be taken lightly.’
In his study Influenza vaccines: time for a rethink, he explains that the risks of the flu are highly exaggerated.
The evidence that influenza represents a threat of public health proportions is questionable, the evidence that influenza vaccines reduce important patient-centred outcomes such as mortality is unreliable…
The author makes the following points:
Influenza vaccines provide no benefit to most recipients since the majority of people do not annually contract the disease.
The “flu” (also known as influenza-like illness) has hundreds of causes. It should not be confused with influenza, which is just one of those causes.
Influenza vaccines can cause serious adverse effects and there is no reliable evidence that they can prevent dangerous complications of the disease.
Contents of the flu vaccine
Afluria® Quad is given to adults in Australia
Afluria® Quad is manufactured in eggs and trace amounts of sodium taurodeoxycholate (TDOC), ovalbumin (<1 microgram/0.5mL dose), sucrose, neomycin sulfate, polymyxin B sulfate and propiolactone may be present.
Each 0.5 mL dose contains, nominally: sodium chloride 4.1 mg, dibasic sodium phosphate 0.3 mg, monobasic sodium phosphate 0.08 mg, potassium chloride 0.02 mg, monobasic potassium phosphate 0.02 mg, calcium chloride dihydrate 0.5 micrograms and water for injections to 0.5 mL.
Serious reactions to the flu vaccine include, but are not limited to:
Life-threatening allergies to various ingredients
Guillain-Barre Syndrome (a severe paralytic disease that is fatal in about one in 20 cases)
Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
Thrombocytopenia (a serious blood disorder)
Not surprisingly Adult influenza vaccine injury claims are now the leading claim submitted to the federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) as the leading alleged injury.
There is a dedicated state-wide group of medical professionals involved in pushing back against the Andrews’ Government Healthcare Amendment (Mandatory Vaccination for Healthcare Workers) Bill 2020.
If you are a healthcare worker, a nurse, a doctor, a cleaner, a cook, a dentist, a clinician or indeed you work out of a hospital setting in any capacity at all, this legislation will affect you.
