It’s steady as she goes for vaccination

Screen shot 2013-09-13 at 7.53.15 PMIt doesn’t matter who leads the country the promotion and practice of vaccination is unlikely to change.

On August 22 the former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced that parents who choose not to have their children vaccinated will miss out on thousands of dollars in government benefits. Since then we have had a change of government with  Tony Abbott at the helm and I see no reason to expect any changes in this promotion and practice of childhood vaccinations.

It was International Women’s Day, March 8, 2007 when as the federal health minister of John Howard’s coalition government our new Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the start of the cervical cancer vaccination campaign. This announcement came after an intense media fear campaign. Concern regarding this particular cancer was overblown with many reports such as that from the Herald Sun  which read: “more than 270 women are killed by cervical cancer annually”,  scaring Australian parents and young women into action. The fear campaign was such a huge success that there are thousands of young women who are very ill from the various and dangerous side effects of a vaccine for which there is no need at all.

But this blog is not about Gardasil but about vaccination in general. When we were children growing up in the 1950s we caught measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox and strangely survived after a day or two at home with mum. But common sense has now taken a backseat to the scientific dogma that is vaccination.

Take the case of a Victorian man diagnosed with measles who in July visited a restaurant in Queensland. I was amused to hear that the chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young thought this sufficiently serious to issue health warnings that large numbers of people had potentially been exposed to the virus. Along with her warning came the all too familiar  encouragement for staff at the restaurant and other outlets that he frequented to seek vaccination.

Currently children are required to be vaccinated with over thirty doses of the various vaccines. Vaccination begins shortly after birth while mum and babe are still present in birthing centres. There the newborn are jabbed with their first dose of hepatitis B vaccine.

Hepatitis B is not common in childhood, neither is it highly contagious. It is primarily an adult disease transmitted through infected body fluids, most frequently infected blood, and is prevalent in high-risk populations such as needle- using drug addicts. So why are babies given this vaccine? Sadly it probably comes down to money rather than good health policy. For in the year 2000, the hepatitis B vaccine was added to the childhood schedule in an agreement between the Bracks labor government and hospitals with its administration being a condition of continued hospital funding.

It needs to be said that there are more reports of adverse reactions from this vaccine than there are reported cases of the disease in children. More than  872 serious adverse events have occurred in children under 14 years of age who had been injected with hepatitis B vaccine. Many of these had life-threatening health problems, were hospitalized, or were disabled following the vaccination. In contrast, only 279 cases of hepatitis B disease were reported in children under age 14.

The continued administration of the hepatitis B vaccine is alarming as it reeks of shocking science and scandalous behaviour that we as a society should not be tolerating. But then the manufacturer Merck, makes almost $1 billion USD a year from this single product. Other vaccines given to young children are multiple doses of vaccines against whooping cough, tetanus, diptheria, measles, rubella, pneumococcus, meningococcus, polio, rotavirus, and haemophilus influenza. And of course there are many more vaccines in the pipeline.

Just how many can we continue to tolerate physically and ethically?

Vaccination began in the 18th century with the English doctor Edward Jenner when he performed his first experimental vaccination inoculating the cow-pox virus into a patient in an attempt to build immunity against smallpox. Edward Jenner also inoculated his 18 months old son with swine-pox, and with cow-pox. His son was never very well after that and in fact died of tuberculosis at the tender age of 21 years.

Activist and author of In the wake of Vaccines, Barbara Loe Fisher writes:

Instead of epidemics of measles and polio, we have epidemics of chronic autoimmune and neurological disease: In the last 20 years rates of asthma and attention-deficit disorder have doubled, diabetes and learning disabilities have tripled, chronic arthritis now affects nearly one in five Americans and autism has increased by 300 percent or more in many states.

Vaccination grew out of the observation that mammals who recover from infection acquire natural immunity when exposed to the infection a second time. When we meet up with that same antigen, our immune system can be quickly triggered to eradicate it. This knowledge of immunity led to the belief that if a foreign antigen was injected into us, then we would  become immune to a future infection.

However it’s not so simple and straightforward when we forego natural immune systems.

There are two compartments to the human immune system. The humoral immune system  and the cellular or cell-mediated immune system. The humoral immune system produces antibodies in the bloodstream as a response to the presence of foreign antigens in the body. The cellular immune system gets rid of foreign antigens through the work of cells in the thymus, tonsils, adenoids, spleen and the lymph system. This action of ridding the body of foreign antigens is known as an acute inflammatory response of the body. This is manifested by the classical signs such as fever, pain, malaise and discharge of mucus, pus, skin rash or diarrhea.

When we give a vaccination we are greatly stimulating the antibody production  but there is very little stimulating of the digesting and discharging function of the cellular immune system. If a vaccine stimulated the whole immune system we would get all the symptoms of disease such as the fever, malaise, pain and discharge. However the vaccine only stimulates the humoral immune system thus avoiding the inflammatory response.

As we continue to add more and more vaccinations to the childhood schedule the assault on the immune system worsens. We may have prevented a disease by vaccination but we have stopped the natural ability to expel organisms due to the suppression of the cell-mediated response. So we prevent a disease but the disease actually never gets resolved. The organisms continue to circulate in the body causing further disease. Thus the scene is ripe for the development of autoimmune diseases such as Crohns disease, Asthma, Diabetes and Eczema and many, many more unnecessary diseases.

What determines which autoimmune disease we develop depends on which tissues in the body are attacked by auto-antibodies. If the insulin producing cells of the pancreas are attacked by auto-antibodies, you develop insulin dependent (juvenile) diabetes. In the case of asthma we have the situation where the respiratory mucosa has been attacked by antibodies produced in response to antigens such as dust or pollen. The next time these substances are inhaled an allergic response is initiated causing constriction of the bronchioles.

What further compromises the immune system are the adjuvants, the substances added to vaccines to enhance the antibody response which can actually lead to serious side effects themselves. These include oil emulsions, mineral compounds (which may contain the heavy metal aluminum), bacterial products, and liposomes (which allow delayed release of substances). The side effects of adjuvants themselves lead to pathologic levels of antibody production, as well as allergic reaction to the adjuvants themselves.

We still have the right to make an informed choice. If you do decide against vaccination you need to register for exemption and yes, you will lose the commonwealth allowances, but on the other hand you will most likely have a healthier child.

  1. This deliberate induction of an immune response is successful because it exploits the natural specificity of the immune system, as well as its inducibility. With infectious disease remaining one of the leading causes of death in the human population, vaccination represents the most effective manipulation of the immune system mankind has developed.

  2. It is in point of fact a great and useful piece of information. Im glad that you just shared this useful information with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thank you for sharing.
